She was beautiful girl, who wanted to become an IPS officer. Getting trained at NCC (National Cadets Corp) she went along with her life. Little did she know that all of it is going to change.
Sonali Mukerjee a young girl from Dhanbad had applied for euthanasia. Euthanasia is a plea submitted to the court to allow mercy killing or legalised suicide. Why did she do that?
Because, she suffered for more than 9 years for a punishment; a crime of being a girl with dreams.
She is an acid attack survivor.
3 men ; Tapas Mitra, Sanjay Paswan and Bhrahmadev Hajra would stalk this young girl. Tapas Mitra was apparently in love with her and wanted to possess her. She said no to his proposal. Because she wanted to make something of her life and not get married to a random stalker.
His response was that she is full of attitude and that he will teach her a lesson.
On 22nd April 2003 she and her sister were sleeping on the roof of their house, when she was attacked. She was immediately rushed to the hospital and her sister was also injured.
The acid had burned her face and neck and upper parts of her body. This started the years of ordeal for her. She was hospitalized for 9 years and her family spent their entire fortune trying to save her.
The attackers were arrested but were released out on bail in 3 months. They are all happy in their lives. Where in the girl barely managed to survive. She and her family appealed to the court a several times but no action was taken. Then when she applied for euthanasia she was noticed. This horrible incident got media coverage and she got a little support from people other than her family.
She is married now. I am sure she is still trying to heal internally and externally. She was on Kaun Banaga Crorepati with Lara Dutta and won 25 lakhs.
But what about those men? What about the law in India? So as I understand you can attempt to murder and disfigure somebody for life and all you get is 3 months in jail. That is a pretty good deal.
How the law changed? Oh! Very simple just regulate the sales of acid. The buyer needs to provide an ID proof for buying the acid. This is what the Indian Penal Code says:
“326A: Whoever causes permanent or partial damage or deformity to, or burns or maims or disfigures or disables, any part or parts of the body of a person or causes grievous hurt by throwing acid on or by administering acid to that person, or by using any other means with the intention of causing or with the knowledge that he is likely to cause such injury or hurt, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which shall not be less than ten years but which may extend to imprisonment for life, and with fine:
Provided that such fine shall be just and reasonable to meet the medical expenses of the treatment of the victim:
Provided further that any fine imposed under this section shall be paid to the victim.
Explanation 1.- For the purposes of ….. this section, “acid” includes any substance which has acidic or corrosive character or burning nature, that is capable of causing bodily injury leading to scars or disfigurement or temporary or permanent disability.
Explanation 2.- For the purposes of ….. this section, permanent or partial damage or deformity shall not be required to be irreversible.’.”
I am at loss for words. Do they not understand what the victim goes through? Are they completely oblivious to pain and suffering? I wish the law could just rule: Hanged until death! (Hey Kanahiya, protest now!)
Also a question to mothers of sons! How do you feel when your son is charged with acid attacked or molestation or rape?
Proud I guess, because if I were you I would have killed him and happily would have taken “Hanged until death”
